You will find us 97 km from Recife, Pernambuco, and only 11 km from downtown Gravatá. If you do not have your own transport, take one of the hourly buses for Gravatá from the Recife Bus Terminal (TIP). The road from Recife to Gravatá is now a comfortable highway, running through extensive cane plantations dating back to colonial times, and which largely replaced the enormous Atlantic Rainforest Mata Atlântica. As you leave Recife, you can still see some preserved areas of this lush ancient forest some way off from the road.
In a little over an hour, after leaving the towns of Vitória and Pombos behind you, the road climbs the Serra das Russas to the Borborema plateau. There is a pronounced change in climate and vegetation, with fresh hill country breezes and trees more typical of the semi-arid. You have entered the Agreste.
The municipality of Gravatá is a cattle farming region, renowned for its purebred horse stables. The town centre is some 500 m from the bus station, and the local bus leaves for São Severino from here at around 12:30pm. The ride to Camucim, where you will find Sempre Verde, takes about 40 minutes. You should get off the bus after the rural shop, owned by Sr Espiridião. Or else, you can take a taxi from Gravatá, but please let us give you the names of the taxidrivers that know the way to the Sempre Verde Ecolodge – Pousada Ecológica Sempre Verde.
Only six km from the centre of Gravatá, you can already feel another change in climate. As we rise beyond 600 metres above sea-level, the breeze is cooler and the vegetation lusher, and it is here that the Highland Atlantic Rainforest has found its refuge. It rains more in this region than in the town below, since the moisture in clouds from the coast precipitates here, leaving little for the Agreste down below and practically nothing for the semi-arid Sertão deeper inland. Thanks to this wetter climate, we have a wealth of natural springs and a pleasant climate for leisure activities.
The bus will leave you in front of the main farm gate of the Sempre Verde smallholding, where the Pousada (Lodge) is. On the way, don't forget to look for a nest of a Ferreiro ou Garrancheiro / COMMON THORNBIRD (Phacellodomus rufifrons), hanging from branch tips. Of all the bird species threatened with extinction in the state of Pernambuco, 21 are still found in our region, so with a little luck you may also observe the Pintor-Verdadeiro / SEVEN-COLORED TANAGER (Tangara fastuosa).
